A filament dryer is worth considering when moisture-sensitive materials, recurring moisture symptoms, or long print sessions make filament condition difficult to control. It is a weaker purchase when your existing material prints consistently and the real problem is an uncalibrated printer. Start with your workflow, then choose equipment that fits it.
Start with the spools you actually use
Write down your three most-used filaments, how long each stays open, and whether its manufacturer requires drying before printing. A material name alone is insufficient: a flexible blend and a standard PLA can have very different preparation instructions. Polymaker identifies nylon, PVA, TPU, and PETG as moisture-sensitive examples in its wet-filament guidance. Check the specific grade before deciding what equipment you need.
Next, count active spools rather than every spool you own. Someone who alternates two colors on weekends has a different capacity requirement from someone feeding several machines every day. Buying unused capacity does not improve a single spool's preparation.
Separate a moisture problem from a printer problem
Use a short print you can reproduce. Save its file, settings, and a photograph before changing anything. If the filament manufacturer recommends drying, run its supported cycle and repeat the same print with the same profile. Your comparison is more informative when drying is the only deliberate change.
A better result suggests moisture management deserves attention; it does not prove every defect was caused by water. If the print remains unchanged, do not automatically buy a hotter dryer. Investigate the printer and slicer. A dryer cannot substitute for a correct nozzle, feed path, or material profile.
Buy the capability you can explain
Your shortlist should answer five questions: does the prescribed material cycle fit the machine's temperature range; does the physical spool fit; how does the machine manage moisture; can filament feed to your printer; and will you use its capacity? The comparison should identify the exact model and revision, because similar product names can hide different capabilities.
Do not select solely by the number of preset material labels. A preset is convenient only when it agrees with your filament and spool instructions. Likewise, a high maximum temperature is valuable for a compatible material requirement, not as a reason to heat every spool more aggressively.

Account for the whole storage routine
A dryer is one part of a routine. Decide where each prepared spool will go when the cycle ends. If you have a large color collection, a small dryer plus separate sealed storage may suit you better than a large heated chamber holding everything. Choose one success criterion before spending: fewer discarded test prints, predictable preparation before a nylon project, or protected feeding during long jobs. Set a review point after several comparable printing sessions. Record both improvements and cases where drying made no noticeable difference.
For an occasional PLA user with consistently good results, storage supplies may be the sensible first purchase. For a material whose maker explicitly requires drying, prioritize a compatible process before the next job. The strongest reason to own a dryer is repeatable material preparation that you will use, rather than an expectation that another accessory will fix every print.
