A hardness number does not by itself specify the drying recipe or confirm compatibility with your printer’s accessories. Complete the material’s required preparation, then evaluate feeding and print settings as their own parts of the workflow.
Record the complete TPU product
Write down brand, product name, hardness, filament diameter, and any high-flow or other modifier. Those details belong together because an instruction for one flexible product should not silently carry over to another. Save the matching manufacturer page with the spool’s inventory entry.
Polymaker’s PolyFlex TPU95 Print Settings specify 65°C for eight hours if the material has absorbed moisture. This is a named-product example with a condition attached. It does not establish a universal cycle for every TPU, every hardness, or a different manufacturer’s spool.
Verify the preparation equipment
Match the material instruction against the dryer’s supported range and operating procedure. Check spool dimensions and heat tolerance separately. If the required process exceeds the equipment’s specification, a generic TPU preset on its display does not resolve the mismatch.
Prepare only a compatible load. If another spool shares the chamber, verify that its material and carrier also support the selected cycle. Keep the source-linked procedure in your record so you can repeat it deliberately rather than rely on a remembered temperature from the last flexible material you printed.
Treat feed compatibility as a separate decision
A dryer may accommodate the physical spool while the printer’s feeding system has restrictions for that flexible material. Polymaker recommends a direct-drive printer for PolyFlex TPU95 on its product page. Check the instructions for the exact printer, external feeder, and material instead of assuming that a tube connection guarantees support.
Plan the simplest approved path between spool and printer. Confirm loading through the normal procedure before starting a complex job. If a new feed issue appears only after adding a dryer or extra tubing, investigate that route before changing the material’s preparation cycle.

Compare print behavior methodically
Use a short model appropriate to the flexible material and preserve the project file. If you are investigating a moisture symptom, hold the profile unchanged across the preparation comparison. If you are investigating feeding, keep the material preparation consistent while you evaluate the supported physical arrangement.
Avoid changing temperature, flow, speed, and retraction simultaneously. A small improvement becomes difficult to explain when every variable changed at once. Record the specific result, including any new inconsistency, so the next test follows evidence rather than the assumption that more drying always makes TPU easier to print.
Plan the whole job and the return to storage
If the material requires protection during printing, confirm that the dryer or enclosure supports the intended mode for the duration of the job. Finish required pre-drying before the first filament reaches the nozzle. Starting heat and a print together is not equivalent to completing a specified preparation beforehand.
After use, follow the manufacturer’s storage guidance and note where the spool went. Bambu’s TPU85A and TPU90A guide, for example, explicitly emphasizes prompt sealed storage with effective desiccant after use; its instructions remain specific to those products. Keep your own exact-grade procedure close at hand. Reliable TPU preparation combines the correct material process, compatible feeding, and an organized handoff after printing.
