Decide whether a drying comparison is useful
If the spool is new, its maker permits immediate use, and your normal test prints cleanly, there may be no immediate problem to solve. Record that baseline. If the same spool later produces unexpected surface defects or increased stringing, moisture becomes one possible explanation worth checking alongside the material profile and hardware.
Choose a small model that exposes the defect you care about. A decorative figure with many supports may hide the cause among several variables. A consistent short test is easier to compare and costs less material if the underlying issue turns out to be unrelated to drying.

Increasing temperature, extending time, and changing retraction simultaneously prevents you from learning which intervention helped. Judge the print, not just the display
A dryer humidity reading describes air near its sensor; it is not a direct measurement of water inside the filament. Use the required cycle and a repeat print rather than assuming a low display reading proves that every layer of the spool is ready. Keep the before-and-after photographs under similar lighting.
Record whether the specific symptom improved, stayed unchanged, or became worse. If the result is unchanged, return to printer troubleshooting instead of repeatedly heating the spool. If extrusion becomes irregular after heating, stop and inspect the spool and filament according to the manufacturers' guidance before attempting another cycle.
Build a simple PLA habit
Keep the current spool's product name, opening date, storage location, and last successful print profile together. A short note such as 'basic blue, sealed after use, comparison clean' is more useful than a vague label saying 'dry.' Your record should distinguish an observed good print from a dryness claim you have not measured.
After a useful drying cycle, protect the spool in appropriate storage so the preparation remains part of an organized process. Review the routine when changing brands or moving the printer to a different room. You do not need an elaborate maintenance calendar for every PLA spool; you need reliable instructions and enough context to recognize when its behavior changes.
